Badi Elaichi or Black Cardamom is a popular Indian spice belonging to the ginger family. It comes in the form of dark brown or black pods with hard, dried skin with small dark-colored seeds inside. It is mainly grown in India, Bhutan and Nepal, with more than half of its world's produce harvested in India.
Badi Elaichi has a strong and pungent aroma with a smokey flavour that comes from how it is dried. It also has notes of mint which balances the otherwise sharp taste.
Due to its strong taste, it is often used whole and used in slow cooking that helps release its flavour. When used in powdered form, less is more as the flavours are intense. Badi Elaichi is an integral part of many savoury Indian dishes like Biryani, Dals and various other curries. It is also one of the prominent ingredients of Garam Masala.
